This is going on the "Smacked in the Head" website. I just thought I'd share it. It's in response to the downward slop in what seems like all of my favorite Sci-Fi/Sci-fantasy series and their inability to keep their own continuity. If they're not going to care enough to keep everything straight then why should I care to read/watch or play whatever they put out?

Super Secret Christmas

Since sometime in November I've been working on a secret project that only my household and my father (who gave me a lot of tips and figured it out) knew about. You see about three years ago I wanted to sculpt a miniature Krumm/Nox figure that I could use in board games and such. Part way through the process I realized I didn't have the required binocular/microscopic vision needed to make that happen. So the figure I ended up with was bigger than intended though I still get incredulity from people when they see how small the figure really turned out. He's about two inches tall. I worked on it for a few days after work and when my eyes had finally recovered and stopped crossing on their own Krumm and Nox were finished. I made them out of tinfoil, toothpicks and Super-Sculpy as you can see and there they sat on my shelf. I asked my dad who had recently gotten into casting with silicone and resin if he could help me cast the figure so I could paint them and essentially have a toy but with me living in Fort Lauderdale and him in Orlando it was kind of hard to make that happen.

Jump a few years forward to today and I was at home doing homework and I kept getting a nagging feeling that I was sick of starting projects that never get finished (I started a life sized Nox at one point out of PVC and he was coming a long as best I could without having the right tools to work on him. Also started a real 6" Krumm action figure but only got as far as the head because I was trying to find standard ball joints that I could use to sculpt around.) With small Krumm on my shelf I resolved to finish it finally and cast it even though I had absolutely no idea how and I was dreading the whole time that I was going to ruin my only Krumm figure. I got the websites for Silicone and Resin from my step-mother and Father and along the way I got the idea that maybe I'd give them out as Christmas Presents to friends, family members and one lucky person who happened to do fan art for my comic at around the same time.

And here we are. For scale I added an image of Krumm next to a quarter from three years ago and a few others from when I finished it. I would love to show you pictures of the whole process but my computer felt the need to dump my photos of Krumm half buried in clay, the shots I took of a handful of Noxs and the painting process. So you get kind of an abridged version. You get to see basically the major points of the process. All the figures, from the clay original (with a metal cog from some shoe that I filled in with orange sculpy to make the base) to the white resin cast to the "Limited Eight Figure Run" I did over the holidays. The Nox on the far left was my fiancee's present, the Blue Noxs are an idea I have for later down the road, the two baseless Krumms were for me including "Black Shirt Bonus Comic Krumm" and the Blue one with a special removable Nox Feature.

Each of the other figures I signed on the bases and numbered. Part of me was considering making them all "1 of 8" just so everyone would feel important but I decided not to. There's also my molds in the Cup of Noodles Box (which I'm keeping), the box of unpainted figures and finally the Unsung Hero of all this. The beat up looking Krumm with all the scratched paint and his Nox were actually the first figures to come out of the molds and were the giunea pigs for paint and clear coat and they're actually the ones I tend to carry around in my pocket.

Anyway even when he was just the clay figure I loved having him as an actual thing. I have a lot of toys around my room and it's fun sometimes to put Krumm next to things and see what kind of ideas come up. The Bonus Comic number 6 is actually one idea that came from such a practice. I had a Planet Hulk figure that came with an Annihilus head for the build a figure in the line and I set Krumm next to it and poof. You get the following comic.

So for the past month and a half I've been consumed with "Batman: Arkham City". Highly recommended, big thumbs up. Based on that I also had a Batman themed Christmas it seems by getting four Batman Graphic Novels and a few action figures so there's little surprise that I doodled Batman on my own which I'm very happy with since I've been trying to draw a good Batman head since I was 8. Also included in this post are Left lit doodles inspired by the clothed figure drawing class. And segueing off of that here is the last of the Clothed figure drawings from the class. Mainly the ones I'm happy with. When NOT playing Batman and being sick my November/December has been consumed with a secret side project that I'll end up posting about in the coming weeks. Until then.

Color Theory

The most worthwhile thing to come out of my Color Theory class. The only project that I actually want to do again for the class and can't. Still I am thinking about going back and changing the angle to match more what I had first intended. It's supposed to be a landscape. I asked if I could approach it in a more "animated" way and began watching a lot of Thundarr the Barbarian. I then went a step further and had Kinkos print a small version of my Brud barbarian on a transparency to act as a cell. Enjoy.

Yes I am busy with school and life right now but I promise that I haven't given up on the comic. I'm actually in the middle of trying something new and involved with a Bonus Comic that could have consequences for how the rest of the series works, before I move on to the next page. Be patient. I was late on the day that the model was dressed Terminator-esque. I found that somewhat humorous. He had some pretty good poses and the final drawing looked very "80's ad" to me. The following week was a female "secret agent" or some such. I was sick. I was told that I draw too taxidermy. I have no idea what that means but he told me to try and be more loose. But when I get too loose he tells me it's too cartoony. By the end of the class I was sick and tired and my final attempt was just all out caricature.

So I'm actually kinda going backwards with these things at the moment. This is the precursor to the the previous Barbarian comic featuring the mermaid, even though I came up with the mermaid first originally. I don't know if I mentioned it before but when I was first considering doing a web comic Brud was the one I was going to go with. I have a handful of ideas for this series so here and there they'll be popping up. It was cool to work on something different while I try to work out problems (character designs) in the Smacked Comic. I personally really like the blues and oranges on the first page. SMACKED IN THE HEAD: Story Bible

For those with a curiosity about what I do in the time that I'm not going to school, moving, drawing the comic/comics or looking for work here's an inside peek.

I love books. I especially love "unique" books. A while back I had heard of a coveted story bible at Bungie Studios for the Halo universe. There's supposed to be four copies of it in fat binders that they keep under lock and key and it tells you absolutely everything about the Halo Universe. This bit of information set my imagination a flame and I decided that I should have a story bible. It's similar to the Data Bank on the web site but with infinitely more information. From human history to alien history to a structured diagram of the universe(s) and an exploded view of NOX's internal parts (which you can see here in an earlier blog post). It is the second of two "unique" Smacked in the Head Books. The first being a 199 page hand written version the first season and what the comic is currently based on. It's an ongoing, ever evolving project with color tabs, notes, drawings and inserts. So I thought I would share something I consider special to the universe that even if this series takes off you're probably not likely to see anyway. HAZZAH!

Full Vector Test

Well since I didn't get the job I figured I would just post the whole test anyway. The job was with Tinyco. The objective was to create a cafe in a similar style to what was already created and a rabbit based on established characters. I did the best I could having received the email on a Saturday morning and finishing it up Sunday night at Ten PM. Again it was all vector and I did the best I could with reference that I couldn't really zoom in on too close (not vector). The cafe was an attempt to keep the silly, large, easily recognizable products style (the big cup) and combine it with reference of a French cafe I found online. The rabbit... kinda creeps me out. Would have really loved to have gotten the chance to work there but oh well. Vita progreditur. Enjoy.

One half of a test I did for a missed job opportunity. It's entirely vector (done in Illustrator) meaning you can blow it up to any size and it won't lose any quality though this actual image is just a Jpeg. It amuses me mostly because I like tiny things. Enjoy.

I have a secret wish to draw the comic panel that revolutionizes science and the world. The idea came to me at the airport waiting for my fiancee a few months ago while staring at the fish tanks from the local zoo or museum. Started to wonder if fish see their world as a weightless flying universe and what it would mean for them to see the other side of it. I think humans see their world one way never knowing of the 'dry land' that's just beyond the glass.

There are other stories rattling around in my head. One of them involves a Barbarian wandering the world looking for a cure to his "Lycanthropy". Despite popular belief, Barbarians are not stupid. They are simply from another region of the world where day to day life is different. I blame Arnold partially for the stereotype because of the Conan movies. Anyway the story of my Barbarian is called "BRÜD" (Brood). I've never really decided whether that was his name or whether he would just be called the Barbarian. Pick whichever you like. Throughout his travels he writes down his own chronicles in a book that attaches to the sheath of his sword mainly to keep track of where he's been but also incase he ever has to reference a previous adventure for whatever reason. I'm getting long winded here but this is an old drawing/idea I've had for years and I thought I'd throw it up here while I'm squaring things away in the comic, work and the rest of life. Consider it a commercial break for "Smacked in the Head". Enjoy.

It's Been Awhile

So it's been a while since I've posted on here. I've just been busy with life. So anyway here are six images of a bunch of things from the end of the school semester, things for the comic and further adventures, and a little randomness. Firstly there's something I call Nerd Girl and Monkey face. The two girls with the "lightsabers" are very loosely based on my fiancee and the girl lounging across the bottom is very much based on her. I'd actually really like to color that one one day. I was going to give those girls faded Star Wars shirts but I figured Lucas gets enough advertising on his own without my help. The monkey face was a product of new blue pencil lead. The nerd girls came about today actually when I was freaking out that my proportions were completely screwed up and that I couldn't draw anymore. Maybe a product of having not done anything in awhile, so I attempted those as a way to reassure myself before I begin character designs for a project soon. The cowboy is something I doodled in a book while in class. The next one with the five girls is just showing off a slow progression of Krumm's eventual love interest in the Smacked in the Head story line. Not the first interest but definitely the one he's destined for. She's not really meant to show up until a little later but it helps to know the characters before I get there. The alien pointing is from a LARGE picture I intend to finish which includes all those Krumm thumbnails of him jumping. The rifle was just me trying to design something different. And speaking of thumbnails they are some of my favorite things about the "art" process. Super simple, easy to do and they generally get the point across completely with very little. The blue square is a quick representation of possibly Krumm's eventual ship shining headlights on a derelict. Finally is a page from my anatomy sketchbook which you can see in the above post. I just like the bottom image. Hopefully a new Comic Page is on it's way. The inking is done and coloring awaits. Till then I hope that this tides you over.

"Cadaver Workshop" or "Real Live Dead People!"

I am fortunate to go to a school that was able to set up a workshop using cadavers. I wasn't really sure how I would take the experience. When I was younger I couldn't even walk into a cemetary without freaking out. Actually walking into the room and seeing how many wrapped up bodies and tables there were actually did make me a little dizzy but we only focused on two that they said they had been using for about 10-15 years. They pretty much just dived right into it then. The whole thing was from 9:30-11 which in the end didn't end up being enough time and they said we couldn't stay for the afternoon group. That's why there's really only four rough drawings.

They said we could poke around and move anything we wanted to get a better look at stuff. I touched a tendon in the thigh. It felt rude to poke at someones insides though dead they may be. And freakin I never realized the heart was so HUGE.
Take care of your hearts people. The guy said he gets bored with the normal ways of dissecting sometimes so he does different things. The one had a had a slice out of the top of the head and half of the brain was left in. It was crazy because you could see the inside curve of the eye socket. So it was almost like an old action figure were you could look in the back of his head and see what he was seeing. You can sorta see a thumbnail on its side in the picture with the face. Trippy.

Overall the bodies were kind of mummy like so it wasn't a huge deal. There wasn't any real smell just the formaldehyde which I feel like I can still smell, would hit you in the face when you got close. I took the bus to get there and in the end I decided to walk the ten or so blocks back through the park and stuff while I can.

New Anatomy Drawings

New Anatomy Drawings. I'm very happy with these. The lecture was all about muscles in the torso today. Unfortunately the successful ones I did of the male model don't look like anything unless you know what you're looking at so I didn't bother putting them up except for the first one on here. By the end of class I was getting hot and annoyed and the image I was doing wasn't turning out and he made us keep working on it. Finally I was fed up and started over my way for the last ten minutes of class. The guy wasn't fat but he's not skinny either so it's hard to find anything really visual to latch onto and say that's a cool looking line and I can replicate that. The girl however was a lot easier. I think it's because women are naturally curvy and to me that relates to cartooning very easily. So I surprised even myself with the last two (I think there was a piece of paper underneath the one that's why there's a line down her shoulder). Enjoy.

I have to come up with a final project that demonstrates an understanding of anatomy...and that's pretty much where the stipulations end besides having to do with my major. I figured that I would borrow Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter Saga starting with "A Princess of Mars" for the assignment because most of the characters are nude throughout the novel anyway. Rather than doing a book cover scenario I figured if I'm going to be a comic artist I should do a comic page. So here's a compilation of sketches that I did for the mid point presentation to try and establish a look. Tars Tarkas still has a long way to go but it's just studies so whatever. Also yes it's true that Disney is doing a movie of the same name but I can't picture the guy they got as John Carter. He's too young looking...and pretty....bleh. As such my Carter (plus mutton chops) is loosely based on Michael Fassbender of "300" fame. He's got that particular kind of handsome ugly going for him and I could totally see him being from the south and having fought in a war the way John Carter was supposed to have. Enjoy.

Out of context it looks pretty good and the basic concepts are there I think. Coming a long slowly. In class though the whole thing was completely wrong and I was going to start over for the sixth time.

So yeah...When you have a teacher that's taking the time to teach you about light and shadow and building up layers of value, it really makes all the difference. Rather than someone walking in, crumpling up a piece of paper on a stool, putting a light on it and walking out for 2 hours out of the three you're supposed to be there. One story out of many...

So if you haven't heard by now I'm back in school again. Having moved to San Francisco to be closer to better jobs and to learn all the things I should have learned the first time around. Here are three images (on 18x24 paper) from my Anatomy class using medium hardness vine charcoal. I haven't done any real life drawing in about 8 years so be gentle in your critiques.

This was something that I was entertaining a few weeks ago on the side. The idea was to create a female character whose journey to adulthood was as justified and interesting as a males and had the potential to be someone that a future daughter of mine might look up to. The knight aspect of it wouldn't be set in stone but it was just one of a bunch of different settings/time periods she could be set in to make the story interesting. It's still pretty rough and was really just a preliminary sketch but I'm happy with some aspects of it.

The plan as of now is to move across the country and attend college once more for my Masters Degree. For the past week or two I've been bouncing around between doing the next page for the web comic and trying to finish a new short animation before I return to school and lose access to the sound studio and people that know what they're doing. Anyway here's a hallway shot that was really a pain in the butt. It took me a few days and really it's only going to be on screen for maybe 2 seconds. WOOO!

Another contribution to the Cthulhu Thursdays. I had an idea a few months ago to do pages from the "Cartoon"inomicon (Necronomicon). Essentially warped images of Lovecraftian creatures in a sick and twisted yet loveable fashion. The man at the cave entrance is just a doodle from "At the Mountains of Madness" where they break through the ice to discover the strange creatures there. It's stupid hard to draw someone in a parka and thick snow clothes and NOT have them look cartoony. The Necronomicon there is more influenced by the version that appears in the "Evil Dead" movies.
And finally the zombie is the product of watching a Halloween show the other night about Haunted House Attractions. In my book there's a note that says "Rotten to the point where gender disappears". That's kind of ironic actually because I started reading "The October Country" by Bradbury and there's a story about mummies that pretty much mentions the same thing.

A rough scan of a concept image from my other story called Horror Hollow. It involves two kids that lose their parents and go to live with their eccentric grandfather. Blah blah blah they're transported to an Oz/Wonderland type of nightmare world of monsters.
I'm going to color this in a kind of pen and ink version with maybe a sepia-ish tint. I'll post it later on when it's done.

So I know I said that this blog was for art unassociated with the webcomic Smacked in the Head (www.goggledhero.com). But this is new ground for me and I wanted to share. I was never really taught perspective in my "Art" classes so I've pretty much had to teach myself in the past few years. I've been doodling this space station in my spare time as a way to open Krumm's universe up to people more. I'm not really sure how it's going to finish up on the bottom but If you look closely in that upper left window a tiny Krumm and Nox are looking out. The only thing more painful than trying to figure out how this thing should look I think is going to be inking and coloring it.

Long before there ever was a World War Z and long before this recent obsession with zombies people seem to find themselves afflicted with I had recurring nightmares. From a young age till about the age of fourteen I dreamt about zombies. Perhaps it was my father's obsession with monster movies and his desire to mess with us with a recitation of "They're coming to get you Barbara" at every chance he got (the fact he referred to me or my brothers as a female in that quote only added to the weirdness and terror of it) or maybe it was living in an "ancient" 1905 farm house in the middle of nowhere. The fear could also have been bred from toilet training with the "Thriller" video/movie playing in the background. Whatever it was, at some point I embraced my fear and began drawing zombies. I did most of these drawings years ago including the Zombie World War one. I find it really easy to draw ugly things. That fact has remained ever true. Enjoy the art. More to come.

Science Fiction Double Feature Picture Show

A couple of months ago I was thinking about doing a series of sketches on the side of my favorite heroes in Sci-Fi. I was also having a kind of crisis of faith over whether or not I could draw anything else besides Krumm and Nox. So at work one day I did a doodle of my childhood hero Luke Skywalker. Later Chronicles of Riddick came on TV and I decided to try that as well. The Riddick one I did in a few minutes so there are some issues that bother me mainly in the goggles area but I think it came out alright. The series pretty much ended with these two because I had to get back to doing the comic. I might still revisit the idea as a break from Krumm. I'd like to do my versions of characters like The Rocketeer, Han Solo, John Carter and maybe Conan to name a few.

Digging through Japan

There's a fantasy in my head that involves a massive, ornately decorated building that is the combination of the most amazing/complete library and museum ever. A repository of human knowledge that has books (floor to ceiling) on every subject imaginable and also artifacts on display from all history throughout the place. I don't think I would ever leave.

I bring it up because I was digging through my "journal" from when I went to Japan two years ago with my friend, and I found the section on Kyoto with these three cards. We were at the Kyoto National Museum and you weren't allowed to take pictures so I resorted to sketching in pen what I could in a moleskin notebook I had on me. It took me forever to get through that place. The most frustrating thing though was that the most I could read of the descriptions on the plaques was the name. The history was all written in Japanese. Still amazing though. If you ever have a chance I recommend Kyoto highly. I only spent two days there but I would go back tomorrow. Anyway, I figure these cards are a perfect example of side art I have that no one ever sees, so enjoy.

P.S. We also ended up going to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. I'm not big on the style usually but that place was a 3 floors and a basement library full of comics. AMAZING!
